The new Audi e-tron GT with 487 km of autonomy

Audi e-tron GT

The Audi e-tron GT is a 100 % electric sports model, with measurements similar to those of the Audi A7 Sportback, but more similar to the Porsche Taycan. It shares with him the J1 platform and some elements of propulsion. It is available in e-tron GT quattro and RS e-tron GT versions with 476 hp and 598 hp, respectively. However, in 'boost mode', for a maximum of 2.5 seconds, it can reach 530 and 646 hp, respectively.

Other key figures in the datasheet of the Audi e-tron GT are its acceleration, of 3.3 seconds between 0 and 100 km / h in the fastest version, or its top speed of 250 km / h with electronic limitation. Again, similar to an Audi RS7 Sportback. But the e-tron GT is a fully electric model. It has a 93.4 kWh battery to reach up to 487 km maximum of autonomy, with two synchronous motors that allow it to offer four-wheel drive.

At the mechanical level, there are some key features in the Audi e-tron GT that place it as a reference model alongside the Porsche Taycan. Its suspension system with pneumatic springs with three air chambers, for example, with adjustable body height by up to 22 mm; or its rear limited-slip differential, as well as mass distribution of 50/50, or the design of the body for an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.24.

At all these levels, it is slightly behind the Porsche Taycan, but the Audi e-tron GT has some of the best values on the market in its technical characteristics. Inside, Audi has opted for the installation of a total of three screens: two of 12.3 inches diagonal work as instrument panel and the third, 10.1 inches diagonal, is dedicated to the multimedia system.

The first thing that hits you when seeing an e-tron GT is its impressive size. With 4.99 meters long, 1.96 meters wide and 1.41 meters high , the last figure that drops to 1.39 meters for the sports version, the Audi RS e-tron GT is a big and cheeky electric car. In addition, we must add a load capacity of 486 litres for the e-tron GT and 431 for the RS, divided into two trunks. In short, a lot of sheet metal for a car must save weight in each of its centimetres.

Of course, we are not speaking about a particularly light car either. With a weight between 2,351 and 2,422 kilograms without a driver, the e-tron GT family is one of the fat ones. A lot of sizes, a lot of equipment and an electrical set that shoots the weight bar. However, at first glance, it does not show off those "extra pounds". A fierce look shows us that the Audi design house is one of the best in the industry.

I like it better than the Taycan, I admit. Well, at the end of the day, it manages to project that image of sportsmanship even from a standstill. The aesthetic differences between the e-tron GT and the RS e-tron GT are minimal. So at first glance, it isn't easy to differentiate them, so much so that only the emblems, the height variation and the rims will give us a clue as to which version we are facing. As I will tell you now, the differences are given in other matters.

Of course, the customization details cannot be overlooked. You can get an Audi e-tron GT or an Audi RS e-tron GT with the style that best suits your personality. The colour palette is very wide, with wheels between 19 and 21 inches, and the contrasting elements are always there to generate a more avant-garde final design. Elements such as the front grill, the underbody or the rear diffuser will always be coloured in a different tone than the bodywork or finished in real carbon fibre.

The same goes from doors to inside. Inside the e-tron GT family, everything expected of an Audi is delivered: quality, comfort and equipment. The presentation of the elements is very striking, with three clearly separated areas. All surfaces are covered by excellent and high-quality materials that increase interior well-being. There are no crude or cheap materials and thank God the presence of the happy lacquered black is less and less, but it is still there.

At the wheel, the feeling is very similar to that delivered with the Taycan (do not forget that they are first cousins). A low driving position with the steering wheel facing the chest and all the elements at hand and ready for the driver. If it were not because the interior space is greater, it is a position that we can also find in pure and traditional sports cars such as the Audi R8.

As I have said, Audi presents the technology in a striking way but not as spectacular as we currently see in other brands, and I like that. There are two main screens. A high-quality panel with a multitude of possible variations and that displays a lot of information in its 12.3-inch size.

This is complemented by the main display of the multimedia system. 10.1 inches of touch system that includes almost all the functionalities of the electric car. Infotainment that is easy to understand and operate, with large surfaces, but with so many different menus and settings that at first, it is necessary to take time to learn. Best of all, Audi has decided to keep the air conditioning out of that panel, showing a straightforward, simple, fast and safe auxiliary module. It doesn't take several taps on the screen to change the temperature or adjust the air jet.

To facilitate the configuration process, Audi offers several packages that bring together various technologies, mainly focused on driving: Dynamic Package, Dynamic Package Plus and Gran Turismo Package. In addition, details such as the electronically locking rear differential, four-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension, upgraded steel brakes, e-tron sports sound or high-quality Bang & Olufsen stereo are included. All these packages are offered in the e-tron GT since the RS unit comes most of the series.

Now let's go to the heart of the matter. I have already said that the best way to call the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT is to say that they are battery-powered beasts. Both have the same electrical scheme. A lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 85 kWh powers two electric motors, one on each axle, which work at a nominal voltage of 800 volts. Recharging shows a maximum power of 270 kW in direct current and up to 22 kW in alternating current, which allows you to recover from 0 to 80% of the load in less than 25 minutes.

As you already know, they are not the first electric cars that the Germans put on the market, because that honour will always correspond to the Audi e-tron, which by the way gives its name to a whole family that in the coming years will grow more and more, such and as the Audi Q4 e-tron has recently shown. But the GT family is the ultimate expression of that luxurious, high-tech electric concept, and that means paying a high price for any of them. The starting price of the Audi e-tron GT is 104,000 euros, without offers or promotions. The Audi RS e-tron GT is advertised from a low of 143,000 euros. These values can grow depending on whether we add more technical or equipment details.
