Smarter Safety Starts With Better Hardware
Mercedes-Benz Trucks built the Safety Truck on the eActros 600, then stuffed it with more processors, sensors, and digital awareness than most office buildings. The new platform pushes 20 times more data than before. Six sensors create a 270-degree field of view, which means the truck pays closer attention to traffic than most drivers pay to their messages.
Short paragraphs keep things sharp. Short sentences keep things honest. The truck's brain collects radar and camera data. It then reacts faster than a human who stayed up late watching repair videos.
Why These Systems Matter on Real Roads
EU crash data shows a tough truth: about 90 percent of fatalities in heavy truck crashes involve people outside the truck. Mercedes-Benz aims at the most common problem areas: rear-end hits, lane departures, intersection impacts, and turning errors. The Safety Truck takes those patterns and attacks them head-on.
Active Brake Assist 6 Plus
Active Brake Assist 6 Plus reacts to pedestrians or cyclists up to 37 mph. It stops the truck before something terrible happens. It handles vehicles at up to 50 mph. The 250-meter multi-lane monitoring can see trouble long before the driver says, “Whoops.”
Attention Assist 2
Attention Assist 2 tracks blink rate, head angle, and pupil activity. If the system thinks the driver needs a break, it speaks up. It deletes data after 15 minutes. The truck knows a lot, but it still respects privacy more than most apps.
Active Sideguard Assist 2
Active Sideguard Assist 2 watches both sides. It covers the blind zone that causes the most stressful moments in urban traffic. It can brake the truck at up to 12 mph when the driver misses a warning during a tight right turn. Think of it as having a co-driver who's allergic to collisions.
Front Guard Assist
Front Guard Assist checks for pedestrians or cyclists right in front of the bumper. The monitored zone starts at 0.8 meters, which means the truck sees people long before the driver wonders, “Where did they come from?”
Traffic Sign Assist
Traffic Sign Assist reads speed signs, checks time restrictions, and reminds the driver when the limit changes. The truck has the map memory of a dedicated navigator, only without the back-seat commentary.
Stability and Trailer Control
Two stability systems work behind the scenes:
- Stability Control Assist
- Rollover Control Assist
Both systems adjust brake force and damping. They cut the risk of skidding or trailer buckling. Drivers get a more predictable experience, and trailers behave better than shopping carts on wet tile.
Semi-Automated Support That Actually Helps
The Active Drive Assist 3 system manages steering, braking, and acceleration under the right conditions. If the driver cannot respond, the truck slows to a stop and unlocks the doors for responders. It is the rare truck that assists the operator and still handles emergencies without drama.
MirrorCam and Acoustic Alerts
The updated MirrorCam uses camera arms shortened by four inches. It delivers a clearer view and removes the “tower-mounted selfie stick” look. Wide-angle views, distance lines, and improved low-light visibility lower stress during tight maneuvers.
Battery-electric models include AVAS, a sound system that announces the truck during low-speed operation. Forward motion creates a soft fan-like noise. Reverse motion uses a two-tone alert, which sounds serious but avoids sounding like a backup singer who missed rehearsal.
Strong Passive Protection
The cabin design shifts upward during a severe frontal crash. This helps protect survival space. Airbags and seatbelt tensioners support the driver. The high-voltage shutdown system reduces risk for emergency crews. The truck protects its occupants, its batteries, and the people attempting to save those occupants.
eActros 600 Powertrain Facts
Three LFP packs supply more than 600 kWh of capacity. Usable capacity exceeds 95 percent. Range hits about 311 miles under long-haul conditions at 40 tons. Daily totals above 620 miles are realistic with charging during legal breaks.
Payload reaches about 22 tons. The lineup includes two cab options, multiple wheelbases, two or three battery packs, and several axle configurations. In short: a lot of ways to move a lot of freight with a lot of stored power.
Why Fleets Should Pay Attention
The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 Safety Truck blends software, sensors, and real crash data. It tries to remove the common causes of severe collisions before they start. Fleets get fewer surprises, lower downtime, and more predictable risk control. Drivers get support during long hours, tough traffic, and the moments when attention drops.
If trucks had personalities, this one would be the coworker who reminds you about deadlines, keeps your schedule tidy, and finds your misplaced keys. Only this coworker weighs 40 tons and carries batteries.
