MG, the British brand owned by Chinese automaker SAIC, has been making waves in the European market with its affordable and practical electric vehicles. The MG4, a compact hatchback that debuted in 2022, is one of its most successful models, offering a range of up to 323 miles on a single charge and a starting price of just $35,000.
Now, MG is expanding the MG4 lineup with two new variants: the MG4 XPower and the MG4 Extended Range. Both models aim to enhance the appeal of the MG4 by adding more performance, features, and battery capacity. Let’s take a closer look at what these new models have to offer.
MG4 XPower: A Sporty Electric Hatchback
The MG4 XPower is the most powerful and dynamic version of the MG4. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers a combined output of 268 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. This allows the MG4 XPower to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 112 mph.
The MG4 XPower also comes with a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires. The exterior design is enhanced by a more aggressive front bumper, a rear diffuser, and a roof spoiler. The interior features sport seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and aluminum pedals.
The MG4 XPower uses a 64 kWh battery pack that provides a range of up to 270 miles on the WLTP cycle. It supports fast charging up to 100 kW, which can replenish 80% of the battery in about 40 minutes. The MG4 XPower also comes with a wireless charging pad, satellite navigation, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a mobile phone Bluetooth key.
The MG4 XPower is priced at $43,000 and will be available in Europe from the fourth quarter of 2023.
MG4 Extended Range: A Long-Distance Electric Cruiser
The MG4 Extended Range is the longest-range version of the MG4. It features a larger 77 kWh battery pack that provides a range of up to 323 miles on the WLTP cycle. This makes it one of the most efficient electric hatchbacks on the market, with a combined driving efficiency of 3.72 miles per kWh.
The MG4 Extended Range has the same rear-wheel-drive configuration and electric motor as the regular MG4 Long Range, which produces 200 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 99 mph.
The MG4 Extended Range also shares the same equipment level as the regular MG4 Long Range, which includes an active grille system, a 10.25-inch color touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an iSMART user app, and an MG Pilot suite of driver assistance systems.
The MG4 Extended Range is priced at $43,000 and will be available in Europe from the fourth quarter of 2023.
A Stronger Electric Offering from MG
The new variants of the MG4 electric hatchback show that MG is not resting on its laurels and is constantly improving its products to meet the needs and preferences of different customers. The MG4 XPower offers a sporty and fun driving experience, while the MG4 Extended Range offers a long-distance and economical cruising capability.
Both models are competitively priced compared to other electric hatchbacks in their segment, such as the Volkswagen ID.3, the Cupra Born, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. They also come with a seven-year warranty and an eight-year battery warranty for peace of mind.
The new variants of the MG4 electric hatchback are expected to boost the sales and popularity of MG in Europe, where it already sold more than 20,000 vehicles in the first half of 2021. With more models planned for the future, such as an electric SUV called the MG Marvel R and an electric sports car called the MG Cyberster, MG is poised to become one of the leading electric vehicle brands in Europe.
