Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB: The Electric Microbus of the Future

Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB

For years, Volkswagen has been teasing us with the idea of an electric revival of its iconic Microbus. The German automaker has finally revealed the production version of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB, a long-wheelbase variant of the futuristic van that will go on sale in 2024.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB is based on the same modular electric platform (MEB) as other ID models, such as the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback and the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover. It will offer a spacious and versatile interior, a range of battery and powertrain options, and advanced technology features, including a self-driving mode.

What's New for 2024?

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB is an all-new model that marks the return of the Microbus to the U.S. market after decades of absence. It will be one of the first vehicles to feature Volkswagen's IQ.Drive system, which will enable Level 4 autonomous driving in certain situations. The system will use a retractable steering wheel, cameras, sensors, and lidar to navigate traffic and parking scenarios.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will also have a distinctive design that pays homage to the original Microbus, with a two-tone paint scheme, a V-shaped front end, and a boxy shape. However, it will also have modern touches, such as LED headlights and taillights, sliding doors, and a panoramic glass roof.

How Does It Drive?

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB will offer two battery sizes: 77 kWh and 111 kWh. The former will provide an estimated range of 250 miles, while the latter will boost it to 340 miles. The van will also have two electric motors, one on each axle, that will deliver either 201 or 295 horsepower, depending on the configuration. The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds and reach a top speed of 99 mph.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will also have a rear-wheel steering system that will improve its maneuverability and turning radius. The van will have four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom. The suspension will be adjustable, and the regenerative braking system will help conserve energy.

What's Inside?

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will have a spacious and flexible cabin that can accommodate up to seven passengers. The seats will be modular and swiveling, allowing for various seating arrangements and cargo configurations. The electric van will also have a flat floor and a sliding center console that can double as a table.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will have a minimalist dashboard that will feature a digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the center stack. The van will also have a head-up display that will project navigation and driving information onto the windshield. The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB will also have a host of safety and driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, surround-view camera, and more.

How Much Will It Cost?

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB is expected to start at around $50,000 when it goes on sale in 2024. That's comparable to other electric vans on the market, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQV and the Rivian R1S. However, the Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB may qualify for federal tax credits and state incentives that could lower its price significantly.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB is a promising electric microbus combining nostalgia and innovation. It offers a spacious, versatile interior, a long driving range, and advanced technology features. It also has a unique design that stands out from the crowd. If you're looking for an electric van that can transport your family or friends in style and comfort, the Volkswagen ID Buzz LWB may be the one for you.
