The new Opel Astra will be available as a fully electric car. The Opel Astra sales begin next spring, but the Opel Astra electric car will be available from 2023. This was stated by Uwe Hochgeschurtz, the new Opel CEO, at the unveiling of the next model generation.
However, he did not want to reveal technical data about the electric drive yet. Orientation could be provided by the Opel Zafira-e, which uses the same EMP2 platform and is already available - with a drive power of 100 kW (136 hp) like the Corsa-e and the Mokka-e, however, in two battery versions with 50 and 75-kilowatt hours (kWh). The Astra-e may get the same drive train. This means that ranges of up to 500 kilometers in the large version should also be possible in everyday use.
But that's just speculation since Opel has remained tight-lipped on the subject for the time being. They wouldn't even admit that the Opel Astra was available as an all-electric vehicle until recently. The German Stellantis subsidiary, on the other hand, has no choice but to compete: Volkswagen has already made a firm offer in the compact market with the Volkwagen ID.3. The VW Group will soon be topping it up again with the Cupra Born electric car. With the Tesla Model 2 made in China, Tesla will likely enter the small class early next year.
But first and foremost, Opel highlighted the new Astra's primarily electric options. Two plug-ins are planned for the launch of sales: the top of the range has a drive power of 165 kW (225 PS) and a maximum torque of 360 Newton meters, while the lower version has a system output of 132 kW (180 PS) and the same torque. Both variants should be able to travel up to 60 kilometers on pure electricity. A battery with a storage capacity of 12.4 kWh ensures this.
The new Opel Astra is designed to provide safe and enjoyable driving. A new front mask named Vizor and a coupe-like body form also ushers the successful model optically into a new era. The interior was also thoroughly cleaned. There is also visibly more foot space and an overall more airy feeling of space thanks to the 13 millimeters longer wheelbase (2,675 millimeters now on). The fully digital "Pure Panel" also helps: the two-part broadband screen in front of the driver and above the center console offers all the information needed on the road and during (charging) breaks, clearly and straightforwardly.
In October, the new Opel Astra will be available for order, with prices starting at 22,465 euros (for conventionally powered models), 300 euros less than the current base model.
