Polestar has secured a multi-year arrangement with Candela, a Swedish hydrofoil boat developer, to supply battery and charging systems. The arrangement is one of the world's first direct battery technology collaborations between automotive and maritime companies.
Polestar and Candela share common ideals of innovative design and commitment to improved sustainability as the leading EV brands in their respective industries. Candela's electric boats 'fly' above the surface, using up to 80% less energy at high speeds than typical powerboats because of computer-controlled hydrofoils that raise the hull above water.
Candela's boats produce no emissions, little noise, and blends a small environmental imprint with more passenger comfort and a smoother sailing experience than traditional boats. Both firms hope to support the evolution of more sustainable electric transportation in society by integrating Polestar's batteries with Candela's pioneering electric hydrofoil technology.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath says: "Candela's electric boats glide smoothly and effectively across the water - or rather, over the water. It's a great illustration of the kind of beautiful pleasures that modern, sustainable technology may produce. It's fantastic that Polestar is now a part of Candela's future developments by supplying critical pieces for the boats' revolutionary propulsion. As a Candela battery provider, we can help facilitate the transition to cleaner world waters and lakes and boost electrification of aquatic transportation."
"Polestar is a dream partner for us," says Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog. While automobile electrification has advanced significantly in recent years, the maritime sector has lagged. Our efficient hydrofoil technology and Polestar's high-capacity batteries allow us to move in the correct path by offering electronic boats to the mass market."
It is the first time Polestar has given battery and charging systems to a third-party source, marking the beginning of wide cooperation between Polestar and Candela, with both companies committed to exploring other options for future collaboration.
