Frankfurt Goes Green: Unveiling the City's New Solaris Urbino 18 Hydrogen Bus Fleet

In a move that burnishes its reputation for sustainability, the city's public transport operator, In-der-City-Bus GmbH (ICB), has placed a significant order for hydrogen-powered buses from Solaris, a leading European manufacturer. This marks the third time Frankfurt has chosen Solaris' innovative hydrogen technology, and this latest acquisition boasts a crucial upgrade: articulated buses.

Why Hydrogen? The Allure of Clean Transportation

Fossil fuel dependence in transportation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Here's where hydrogen steps in – it offers a compelling clean alternative. Hydrogen-powered buses, like those commissioned by Frankfurt, produce zero emissions at the tailpipe. They achieve this feat by harnessing the power of hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This clean electricity then propels the bus, leaving behind only water vapor.

The Benefits of Articulated Buses

Articulated buses, also known as bendy buses, offer a distinct advantage over their standard-sized counterparts. They essentially function as two buses connected by a joint, allowing them to accommodate significantly more passengers while maintaining maneuverability. This translates to several benefits for Frankfurt's public transport system:

  • Environmental impact: While both standard and articulated hydrogen buses boast zero emissions, the latter's increased passenger capacity can contribute to a lower overall carbon footprint per passenger.

Frankfurt's Commitment to a Sustainable Future

ICB's repeated investment in hydrogen-powered Solaris buses underscores Frankfurt's unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. The city aims to achieve a fully electrified bus fleet by the early 2030s, aligning with its ambitious climate protection goals. This recent order for nine Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen buses complements the existing fleet of 23 hydrogen-powered Solaris buses already gracing Frankfurt's streets.

  • Proven track record: With over 200 hydrogen buses delivered to 24 European cities and hundreds more on order, Solaris has a proven track record of successful hydrogen bus deployments.
  • Advanced technology: Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen buses boast a 100 kW fuel cell, ensuring efficient and clean operation. Additionally, auxiliary batteries provide supplemental power, and the hydrogen is stored safely in roof-mounted tanks.

Beyond Buses: Building a Hydrogen Ecosystem

The success of hydrogen-powered buses hinges not just on the vehicles themselves but also on the infrastructure that supports them. To ensure the smooth operation of its growing hydrogen fleet, Frankfurt is actively working towards establishing a hydrogen refueling station.
