Opel becomes electric and launches Manta-e

Opel becomes electric

Opel starts the next chapter in the electrification offensive: The traditional German car brand, which is in the process of electrifying the entire model portfolio, will from 2028 focus on only selling battery-electric cars in Europe. Opel will also enter the world's largest car market, China, as a fully electric car brand. Finally, the legendary Opel Manta will re-emerge as an electric car within the next four years.

"In 2028, Opel will only offer electric cars in Europe," Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller told Stellantis EV Day 2021, which was online. "It clearly shows that we take it seriously when it comes to Opel and electric mobility. The future of the automotive industry is electric - and Opel is part of it. We are on a journey where we reinvent Opel and transform ourselves into a younger, green and global brand. Opel is moving from conservative to cool. We are moving towards a zero net CO 2 future, where CO 2 is the new currency in our industry."

The final decision to bring the Opel brand back to China has now also been made. One of Opel's goals is to become a global car brand. "China is the world's largest car market, and we believe we can grow the brand in that part of the world as well," said CEO Micahel Lohscheller. In China, Opel will sell only electric cars.

Lohscheller announced on the same occasion that Opel would reinvent the legendary Manta. This has been decided on the basis of the very positive feedback received after the introduction of the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD. "Manta is a true icon in our history as well as an inspiration for our future. We will introduce a new series-produced Manta around 2025. Fully electric, of course," said Micahel Lohscheller.

Opel is in full swing with its electrification offensive. By the end of the year, the brand will offer nine electrified models, and by 2024, all Opel models will be available in an electrified version.
